Superman, Kal-el was sent from Krypton as a baby. Their planet was about to explode. To save their son's life, Jor-el, Superman's father, put the tiny baby in a prototype spaceship just big enough for the little baby. To increase Kal-el's chances of survival, Jor-el sent the ship to Earth, where the yellow sun and lower gravity gives Kal-el incredible strength, the ability to fly, and most importantly, invulnerability. In addition to these powers, Superman has super hearing, x-ray vision and heat vision. He can hold his breath indefinitely which allows him to travel in space or go underwater for as long as he wishes.
Jor-el, a brilliant scientist had found out about their planet's impending doom, but his warnings went unheeded. The Kryptonians did not build a fleet of spaceships to bring their people to safety. Kal-el was the sole survivor of Krypton.
If you read the earlier comic books, there were other survivors. Supergirl, Kal-el's cousin and Krypto, his pet dog had all escaped Krypton's doom. An entire Kryptonian city of Kandor was shrunken and taken away by Braniac, a space villian who kept that shrunken Kryptonian city in a bottle for his own pleasure.

When the spaceship landed on earth, a kindly couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent found the spaceship with the baby in it. They adopted the Kal-el as their own child and named him Clark. Clark was Martha's maiden name.
The Kents raised Clark to be a caring, considerate, responsible person. In the original superman comics, he displayed his powers as a baby on the farm. As a teenager, he protected Smallville as Superboy. In later versions, his powers only surfaced in adulthood.
Clark Kent became a reporter for the daily planet in Metropolis. He protected the city and the rest of the world as Superman.
